How Do You Know if Your Child Needs Psychological Testing?
It’s not always easy to tell when a deeper issue is affecting your child’s learning, behavior, or emotions. Psychological testing can help determine whether challenges are part of typical development or signs of something more. If you’ve been wondering whether an evaluation might be helpful, below are some common signs to look for. Identifying the root of the problem early can lead to more effective support at home, in school, and beyond.
Testing may be helpful when a child, teen, or young adult is:
- Struggling in school despite effort and support
- Having difficulty focusing, following directions, or completing tasks
- Experiencing emotional outbursts, mood swings, or persistent sadness or anxiety
- Difficulty understanding math, reading, writing, or other school-related tasks
- Having trouble connecting with peers or understanding social cues
- Experiencing behavioral issues at home or school
- Not responding as expected to previous treatments or interventions
- Recovering from a concussion or suspected brain injury and showing changes in mood, memory, or attention
Psychological testing helps provide a clearer picture of what is happening beneath the surface so the right next steps can be taken.

Questions About Psychological Testing
How do I know if my child needs psychological testing?
If your child is experiencing persistent challenges with learning, behavior, mood, or social interactions, testing can help uncover the underlying cause and guide your next steps.
How long does the process take?
Most assessments involve an intake session, one to two days of testing, and a feedback session within a few weeks. The full process typically spans three to four weeks depending on scheduling.
Is psychological testing covered by insurance?
We are out-of-network with insurance but can provide a superbill for reimbursement. You may also use Thrizer, a service that helps clients file out-of-network claims.
What if I’m unsure which evaluation my child needs?
That’s okay. Your evaluator will help determine the most appropriate assessments during the initial consultation.
What happens after testing?
You will receive a written report and a full explanation of results in a feedback session. Recommendations may include therapy, school accommodations, or other resources to support your child’s growth.
