Healing starts with understanding

Relationships can be complex, especially when conflicts arise or emotional distances grow between you and your partner. When your partnership is facing challenges like frequent misunderstandings or arguments, feeling lonely or more like a “roommate,” infidelity (emotional, physical, or both), differences in values or priorities, or major life transitions (moving in together, children, relocation, financial stress), you may feel isolated or alone. You may spend time wondering, “where did we go wrong?” If you have found yourself exhausted by current concerns, couples therapy can help.

Couples therapy provides a safe and structured space where each partner can voice their thoughts, gain new communication techniques, and collaborate towards forging a stronger relationship.

Working together as a couple
In couples therapy, we aim to do more than solve problems or find a “quick fix.” We focus on rebuilding trust and enhancing communication to ensure that each partner feels understood and respected. In couples therapy, we’ll explore your partnership’s dynamics and work collaboratively to create solutions that foster emotional health and connection. You don’t have to face these challenges alone—couples therapy is here to support you in finding healing, within your partnership.

What is Couples Therapy?

Couples therapy is designed to help partnerships navigate and overcome various challenges. Treatment focuses on improving communication, resolving conflicts, and addressing issues that impact the partnership. Whether your relationship is dealing with frequent misunderstandings or arguments, feeling lonely or more like a “roommate,” infidelity (emotional, physical, or both), differences in values or priorities, or major life transitions (moving in together, children, relocation, financial stress), couples therapy may help each partner understand their role in the relationship and how to best support one another.

At The Coping Resource Center, our psychologist utilizes Emotion-Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) to gain security, and trust in your relationship. Treatment focuses on learning about your current patterns, understanding your individual needs and attachment styles, reducing arguments, creating new experiences, and strengthening your relationship. You will learn skills to be emotionally available for one another, respond with empathy and compassion, and meaningfully engage with one another and feel secure in your relationship.

Questions About Starting Couples Therapy

Any relationship with partners looking to strengthen their relationship, not only when you feel things are “falling apart.” Treatment can be for those dating, married, and in ethical or consensual non-monogamous relationships, who want to learn skills to strengthen their bond. Whether you are seeking preventative care, desire reconnection, or want support with ongoing conflict, couples therapy may be for you.

Couples therapy can help with a variety of issues, including:

  • Ongoing conflict between partners
  • Infidelity
  • Exploring changes in your relationship, including ethical or consensual non-monogamy
  • Trauma, loss, or life transitions such as relocation or infant loss
  • Parenting struggles
  • Health concerns
  • Mental health difficulties like anxiety
  • Difficulties with navigating a blended family
  • Betrayal of trust and feelings of isolation
In short, it depends. The duration of couples therapy is dependent on the complexity of concerns and the goals that each partner has. Some partnerships may find resolution in a few sessions, while others may need ongoing support.
No – seeking support is a sign of commitment to the relationship, not a failure. Many people fear being judged, blamed, or intimidated at the thought of beginning couples therapy, if you feel that way, know you are not alone. Couples therapy is not blaming someone for their concerns, but rather is focused on strengthening the relationship and understanding one another’s perspective. If you are hesitant to seek therapy, you can start by taking the first step and booking a 15-minute consultation.
It can be challenging when you don’t feel heard or understood in your relationship, and you may be seeking someone to “take your side” with ongoing concerns. Our couples therapy providers use ethical, evidence-based treatment, which means that we do not take sides or decide who is “right.” Rather than taking a side, treatment will be focused on strengthening communication, identifying patterns, respect, and fairness. The goal of treatment is to support your relationship and foster growth, not judge, criticize, or tell you whether you should or shouldn’t continue your relationship.
Couples therapy might feel challenging at first, because you will be addressing topics that have caused emotional strain, may have been avoided, or are uncomfortable truths to discuss. Don’t worry – it gets better! Talking openly, in a safe space, about these topics may temporarily cause tension, which is a part of the growth and healing process. Treatment is aimed to help you gain skills to overcome negative patterns or cycles, increase intimacy, improve communication, and reduce conflict – all pieces to help your relationship.
If one partner doesn’t want to go to couples therapy that does not mean your relationship is “doomed” or that your fears or concerns don’t matter. There are steps that you can take prior to scheduling a first appointment, including choosing your provider together and having a free video consultation.
