Understanding Your Child Starts Here

Your child works hard. Homework gets done, tutoring hasn’t fixed it, and the report card still doesn’t reflect the effort you’re watching every night. Or maybe it’s the opposite: grades look fine, but you can see your child struggling to keep up, quietly compensating in ways that won’t hold forever.

Either pattern is a signal. Psychoeducational assessment exists to find out what’s underneath it.

At Coping Resource Center, psychoeducational testing gives you a clear, evidence-based answer: which cognitive processes are working well, which ones are getting in the way, and what specific accommodations or interventions would actually help. Not a guess. A documented explanation your child’s school is required to consider.

A diagnosis isn't the end goal. A plan that works is.

Learning Assessments In Houston

What Is a Psychoeducational Assessment?

A psychoeducational assessment measures how your child thinks, learns, and processes information, then compares that against their actual academic performance. It combines standardized IQ testing, academic achievement testing, and measures of memory, processing speed, and attention to answer one core question: is there a gap between your child’s ability and their performance, and if so, why?

These evaluations are commonly used to identify or confirm:

  • Specific Learning Disorders (dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia)
  • Discrepancies between IQ and academic achievement
  • Slow processing speed or working memory difficulties
  • Giftedness or twice-exceptional profiles (gifted with a co-occurring learning difference)
  • Eligibility for school accommodations under a 504 Plan or IEP
  • Whether ADHD, anxiety, or another concern is contributing to academic struggle

The goal is a clear picture of how your child learns best, backed by data your child’s school can act on.

How Do You Know if Your Child Needs an Assessment?

It’s not always obvious whether a child is struggling because of effort, teaching style, or something more specific to how they process information. A psychoeducational assessment can help separate those possibilities.

Testing may be helpful when a child, teen, or young adult is:

A psychoeducational assessment turns “something’s not right” into a specific, actionable answer.

PSYCHOEDUCATIONAL TESTING IN HOUSTON

Benefits of Psychoeducational Testing

  • Clarity, not guesswork. Testing identifies exactly which cognitive processes are strong and which need support.
  • School accommodations with evidence behind them. A formal report gives your child’s school documentation to act on for a 504 Plan or IEP.
  • A plan tailored to how your child actually learns. Recommendations are specific to your child’s profile, not a generic list.
  • Relief for your child. Many kids have quietly believed they’re “not smart enough.” Testing often shows them the opposite is true.

What To Expect With Psychological Testing:

Your evaluator reviews academic history, report cards, prior testing or IEP/504 documents, and your specific concerns and goals for testing.
Your child completes one or more testing sessions covering IQ, academic achievement, and relevant cognitive measures. Sessions are paced to your child’s age and attention span.

With your consent, your evaluator may request teacher rating scales or report cards to corroborate what’s happening in the classroom.

You’ll receive a full written report and a feedback session walking through the results, any diagnoses, and specific recommendations for school accommodations, tutoring, or further support.

PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING IN TEXAS

Questions About Psychological Testing

Psychoeducational testing focuses specifically on learning: IQ, academic skills, memory, and processing speed. A broader psychological or neuropsychological evaluation may also assess autism, mood, or brain injury. Your evaluator can help determine which is the better fit during your consult, and psychoeducational testing can expand into a fuller evaluation if the results point that way.
A completed psychoeducational report is documentation your child’s school is required to consider for 504 or IEP eligibility. We can’t guarantee a specific outcome from the school, but a well-documented evaluation is often the deciding factor when a school has been hesitant to act.
School evaluations are free but often narrower in scope, slower to schedule, and focused specifically on eligibility rather than a full picture of how your child learns. A private evaluation is typically faster, more comprehensive, and gives you a report you control and can bring to any school, tutor, or specialist.
Most evaluations involve an intake session, one to two days of testing, and a feedback session, spanning three to four weeks total depending on scheduling.
That’s a normal starting point. Your evaluator will help determine the right scope of testing during your initial consultation.
