About OCD

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder involves unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images, or urges (obsessions) that create distress, and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) performed to reduce that distress or prevent a feared outcome. Symptoms can show up as contamination concerns, checking, a need for symmetry or order, intrusive thoughts, or silent mental rituals, and they often interfere with daily life, relationships, or work.

What Helps

Individuals experiencing OCD symptoms often benefit from evidence-based treatments such as Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), which is widely considered the gold-standard approach for OCD. A licensed clinician can help determine whether ERP or another treatment approach is the right fit.

This is a screening tool, not a diagnostic instrument. It is intended for educational purposes only and does not constitute medical or psychological advice, nor does it replace evaluation by a licensed mental health professional. Only a qualified clinician can diagnose OCD. If you are concerned about your symptoms, please reach out to a mental health provider.

This self-screener was developed by Coping Resource Center and is informed by recognized, clinically-validated OCD symptom measures, including the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS; Goodman et al., 1989) and the Obsessive Compulsive Inventory–Revised (OCI‑R; Foa et al., 2002). It does not reproduce either instrument and is not a substitute for either. Our clinicians use the Y-BOCS directly in-session as part of formal assessment and treatment tracking.

Frequently Asked Questions About OCD Treatment

There is no one thing that causes OCD, but it can develop based on a combination of factors, including genetics, brain structure and function, environmental influences, and psychological triggers.

Some common lifestyle triggers may contribute to exacerbating OCD symptoms as well, such as: stressful life events, certain substances, or a lack of sleep.

Your Houston OCD therapist will work with you to determine a comfortable pace of treatment and exposure sessions can be modified as needed. They will be there alongside you supporting you through any difficulties you experience.

No, your therapist will never force you to do anything you do not want to do. They can give recommendations and encouragement but ultimately you get the final say in treatment decisions.

At the start of exposure sessions, clients may initially experience a temporary increase in anxiety. If this is your experience, be assured that anxiety levels typically decrease, often within the very first session itself. As a result, clients often leave feeling more at ease and with a sense of achievement.

Exposure and response prevention has been studied for years and has very strong support in effectively treating OCD both in the short-term and long-term.
