Exposure & Response Prevention Therapy from licensed therapists.

What Is Exposure & Response Prevention Therapy?

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a specialized, action-oriented treatment designed to help individuals regain control over obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors. It is widely considered the gold standard for treating OCD and various anxiety disorders.

ERP is grounded in the principle that while we cannot always control the onset of an intrusive thought or feeling, we can change how we respond to it. By gradually leaning into discomfort without relying on “safety behaviors” or compulsions, the brain eventually learns that the perceived threat is not as dangerous as it feels—a process known as habituation.

ERP can help with:

With ERP, you’ll be able to face uncertainty with confidence rather than avoidance. This adjustment process allows you to live a life dictated by your values, not your fears.

Techniques Used in ERP

Exposure and Response Prevention is a collaborative, evidence-based treatment. During each session, you and your therapist will work together to create a “hierarchy” of challenges, ensuring the pace of treatment feels manageable yet effective. ERP is typically short-term and provides patients with a “toolkit” for long-term symptom management.

ERP Techniques Include:

Common Myths About ERP

This is one of the biggest misconceptions about ERP. In reality, treatment usually starts with smaller steps and builds over time. The idea is not to overwhelm someone, but to help them practice facing discomfort in a way that feels manageable.

Exposure is only part of the treatment. The other half is response prevention, which is especially important in OCD. Without that piece, the cycle of fear and relief can keep repeating.

When done well, ERP is not meant to be harsh. It should be collaborative, respectful, and paced carefully. The goal is to help people feel more in control, not less. You set the pace, and you don’t have to do anything you do not want to.

ERP is best known for OCD, but it is also commonly used for phobias. That is because both conditions involve fear, avoidance, and short-term relief from escaping the trigger.
