Grief Can Be Overwhelming,
But You Don’t Have to Face It Alone
Grief doesn’t follow a timeline. It can come in waves, catch you off guard, and affect your life in ways you never expected. You may be functioning on the outside, but feel numb, disconnected, exhausted, or emotionally overwhelmed inside.
You Might Be:
- Struggling to get out of bed or find motivation
- Feeling numb, anxious, or emotionally fragile
- Experiencing brain fog, sleep disturbances, or loss of appetite
- Having difficulty concentrating or completing daily tasks
- Withdrawing from loved ones or feeling misunderstood
- Longing for the person who died
- Feeling confused and lost
- Not knowing who you are or what your purpose is anymore
- Feeling guilty for experiencing moments of joy
It’s common to feel pressure to “move on” or “stay strong,” especially from others who may not understand the depth of your grief. But real healing doesn’t come from ignoring your pain. It comes from moving through it with the right support.

What is Complex Grief?
Most people find that grief softens with time. They begin to find moments of relief, reconnect with life, and integrate their loss into their daily experience. It’s not that the loved one is ever forgotten or missed, but they feel that they can manage their life despite the loss.
For others, the pain of grief feels as fresh months or even years later. If you feel stuck, unable to move forward, or consumed by your loss, you may be experiencing what’s known as complex grief or prolonged grief disorder.
Signs of complex or prolonged grief may include:
- Trouble engaging in daily activities, work, or relationships
- Inability to accept the death or persistent disbelief
- Ongoing emotional numbness, bitterness, or anger
- Avoiding reminders of the loss or being overwhelmed by them
- Life feels meaningless or without purpose
- Intense longing for the person who died, even many months later
Complex grief often develops after traumatic, sudden, or deeply significant losses, and it’s not a sign of weakness or failure. I’s a sign that you may need more specialized support.
At the Coping Resource Center, our therapists are trained to recognize and treat prolonged grief using evidence-based methods such as Prolonged Grief Therapy, Trauma-Focused CBT, and ACT. With the right tools and connection, healing is possible.

Common Questions about Grief & Trauma Therapy for Children and Teens
Is telehealth really effective for kids and teens coping with grief or trauma?
Yes. Studies show that virtual grief counseling can be just as effective as in-person therapy for children and adolescents, especially when delivered by skilled clinicians. Our providers are trained to use developmentally appropriate, engaging methods that help kids feel safe and supported, even on screen. In some cases children and teens find video sessions less intimidating and more in sync with how they are used to communicating with their peers.
What signs should I watch for that my child might need grief therapy?
Kids and teens may not express grief the same way adults do. You might notice:
- Sleep or appetite changes
- School struggles or declining grades
- Avoiding reminders of the loss
- Acting out, withdrawing, or seeming unusually sad
- Sudden mood swings
- Headaches, stomachaches, or fatigue
If you’re concerned or your child has experienced a major loss or trauma, early support can make a big difference.
Do you involve parents in therapy?
Yes. For young children, we often include caregivers in sessions or provide parent coaching. Teens usually meet more independently, but we keep you informed and involved as needed to support your child’s progress.
Do you offer virtual therapy for teens in other states?
Yes. Through PSYPACT, we offer online grief counseling to clients in 42 states. Teens often appreciate the flexibility and privacy of telehealth, and we’ve found virtual sessions especially helpful for students with busy schedules, transportation barriers, or those in rural areas.

Questions About Therapy For Grief
Does grief therapy really help?
Yes. Grief therapy provides a safe, supportive space to process loss and develop healthy coping strategies. While grief is a natural part of life, therapy can be especially helpful if you feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure how to move forward. Our therapists use evidence-based approaches to help you work through the pain, honor your loss, and rebuild meaning.
Is grief therapy only for people who’ve lost a loved one?
Not at all. While many clients come to us after a death, grief can also follow divorce, job loss, chronic illness, miscarriage, or other life transitions. We also support people experiencing ambiguous loss, such as having a loved one with dementia or addiction, and disenfranchised grief, where the loss may not be widely recognized by others.
How long does grief counseling usually last?
It varies. Some clients come for a few months to work through acute grief, while others engage in longer-term therapy, especially if the loss is traumatic, sudden, or complicated. Your therapist will collaborate with you to set goals and determine the right pace for your healing.
Can therapy really help with traumatic or complicated grief?
Yes. If your grief feels intense, prolonged, or linked to trauma, specialized grief counseling can be incredibly effective. Our clinicians are trained in Prolonged Grief Therapy, ACT, CBT, DBT, and trauma-informed approaches like TF-CBT to help you process the pain, find relief, and reconnect with life.
